We know this is an extremely challenging and worrying time for all of you and wanted to get in touch to let you know about the actions we are taking to support you and work towards the time when the town centre “re-opens” for business.
We have been concentrating on summarising and coordinating advice and information from Government sources and making these easily available on our website and social media platforms. We will continue to update and add to this information on a daily and weekly basis. In addition, we have been sending weekly to twice-weekly eshots to all our email subscribers. These sessions are aimed to provide you with support; connecting people to one another, sharing advice and information and having some “experts” on hand to answer particular questions. We will aim to theme each session, watch our social media for updates.
We are regularly updating and sourcing advice and handy hints from “experts” in the town on issues such as financial assistance, employment advice, marketing. These will take the form of videos and posts on our social media feeds.
If you haven’t already, please contact your bank, lender, mortgage provider, insurance broker, accountant and solicitor and see what help they can provide you.
The Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk has just published the business grant eligibility checker on their website, you need to complete this before end of April to access the grants. The Council are currently making payments about 7 days after receiving applications, as long as they have all the required information, it might take longer if the form is completed incorrectly or information is missed out. We’re looking for content from you. We want to promote your business and keep our town and all it has to offer in people’s minds. Please can you provide us with images, videos, handy hints about things that people can buy or do during this period? Send them to us via email or direct message on social media.
If you have closed your premises, please check them regularly to ensure that they are secure. We have provided a checklist for guidance:
- Test your alarm regularly and ensure it is fully operational
- Identify vulnerable areas in your property, check these are secure, check security gates, bollards and fire exit doors remain secure.
- Check service doors are closed and locked.
- Make sure you have an up to date list of key holders who can be contacted in times of emergency.
- Place high value items in secure stockrooms and out of view.
- Use timer switches or ensure sufficient lighting is left on at the premises / surrounding area.
- Remove combustible materials from the proximity of the building such as packaging – consider the risk of arson.
- Review your CCTV to confirm it is operational, provides good quality images and is positioned to cover as much of the store’s public and private areas. You may wish to consider a mobile phone app that allows connectivity and a vocal capacity to engage with any intruder.
- Do not leave any cash on the premises (leave a note on the door stating that no cash or valuables are kept overnight) or store then in a security accredited safe bolted to the floor.
- If you are keeping an eye on CCTV footage or have on-site security, you can report incidents and suspicious behaviour directly to Police, call 101 to report a non-urgent incident / an event that has taken place. If you are on Shopwatch / Pubwatch contact the local policing team and our Streetrangers so that other businesses can be informed.
Working From Home Security
- Strong password policy- Use a strong password for all devices and social media accounts. Change default passwords on all your devices when initially installed (especially your Wi-Fi router at home or any Internet of Things devices you may have) and consider using password managers to store and protect your passwords.
- FA- Turn on the two-factor authentication setting on all your accounts and devices.
- VPN- Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to protect and encrypt the data you send or receive.It will also scan devices for malicious software.
- Software update- Set all your devices and apps to download and install updates automatically to ensure that any crucial fixes are notmissed and the risk of your devices being infected with malware is reduced.
- Back up- To safeguard your most important personal data and information, back them up to an external hard drive or cloud-based storage system.
- Phishing emails- Cyber criminals are targeting people and businesses with fake emails about the coronavirus. Phishing emails may appear genuine but are embedded with a virus that could compromise your device, as well as manipulate you into sharing personal orfinancial information.
- Install anti-virus- Install and activate anti-virus software on all your devices, preferably set it to update automatically. This will help you to run a complete scan of your system and check for any malware infections.
- Safe online browsing- Only visit trusted websites especially when online shopping. Keep an eye out for websites that have a padlock sign in the address bar, as this shows that the connection and your personal information (e.g. credit card information) is encrypted and secure.
- Social media- It is important to review the privacy, password and security settings for all your social media accounts to ensure they are as secure as possible.
- Communication- Maintain contact with your team, as it is easy to feel isolated or lose focus when working at home.
We are looking ahead to when restrictions are eased. Our activities are likely to focus on 3 main areas;
- business support and advice, including how to help businesses save money,
- marketing and promoting the town, including regular events to attract visitors,
- making the town look attractive and welcoming for visitors and new businesses.
As we move forward, it will be even more important to work in partnership with the Borough and County Councils, Local Enterprise Partnership and you, our members to deliver activities and see our town centre thrive.
