In a bid to highlight some of King’s Lynn’s independent-led streets this winter, Discover King’s Lynn has funded brand-new, bespoke Christmas lights for 2 town centre streets.
Festive installations in Tower Street and the lower half of Norfolk Street towards Railway Road will look a little different come King’s Lynn’s Light Switch On this Sunday. Existing overhead lights have been replaced this year with a combination of brand-new lighting frames and baubles, including a large, illuminated, and sequined frame naming each street.
The new lights, which will be lit for the very first time on the 27th November, have been designed to reflect the independent nature of each King’s Lynn street and in some cases, the nature of the businesses that the street plays home to also. Frames with the illuminated words “Cheers!” and “Party” have been installed in Norfolk Street to celebrate the night-time economy scene associated with the location, while Tower Street’s new lights remain more classic to tie in with the historic properties.
Vicky, BID Manager, says “Creating a sense of pride in our town centre is part of our business plan and Christmas lights play a big part in that during the festive season. Given the challenges businesses have faced over the last few years, and particularly in recent months, we carefully considered whether new lights were a priority for this year. However, having spoken to the businesses it was made evident that Christmas was not cancelled, and new lights would be very warmly welcomed!”
Discover King’s Lynn has purposefully designed their new lights in a way that would enable them to be used all year round and even in other parts of the town centre when appropriate. The specific design of the lights also means that they can be made more elaborate in future years with the possible addition of more sequins, different colourways and the likes.
The BID’s efforts to create pride in our town will not end with these 2 streets, however. Discover King’s Lynn’s role on the Town Deal Board means that they are continuing to encourage lighting schemes in regeneration designs for the Riverfront, Purfleet Street and in the redesign of the public realm around the new Multi-User Community Hub. The Discover King’s Lynn team also hopes to work with the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk to gradually replace existing Christmas lights around the entire town centre in coming years.
Be sure to head into town this Sunday the 27th November to see KIng’s Lynn’s new lights in action! The Christmas Light Switch On will take place at 5pm from the Tuesday Market Place, for more details about activities going on throughout the day click here.
